How to Pass the CPA Exam

How can you pass the CPA exam? The answer is planning and preparation.

The first thing you need to do is develop a study plan. The CPA Exam can be taken in January, February, April, May, July, August, October and November. Consider that you need at least four to six weeks of preparation for each part. If you plan to sit for your first part by the end of January, you need to begin studying soon. You also need to apply for the CPA Exam. You can obtain the application at www.nasba.org. It takes six to eight weeks to process the application.

There are four sections of the CPA Exam, Financial Accounting and Reporting, Auditing and Attestation, Regulation, and Business Environment and Concepts. You have to successfully pass all four parts within 18 months. I recommend completing the exam within six months to one year if possible. The process can be grueling, so why drag it out!

  1. After we finish the review course sessions for a specific part of the exam, how many days should we allow for individual studying before we take the part?

  2. In addition to taking the review classes how much out of class studying is recommended? Also, is it common for students to start their own pre-review session studying during their last semester of college, and do you find this to be effective?

  3. I have a question regarding the nature of the CPA certification. Once we pass the exam and all the other requirements for obtaining the certificate, will we be able to use it abroad? Do only American-based companies that follow GAAP abroad acknowledge the CPA certificate?

  4. Can students register for a review while they take their last semester of college? Would you recommend this?

  5. Katrina,
Plan to study for about one to two weeks after the last class to get ready for the exam. If you delay taking the test for much longer, you will begin to forget what you have learned.

  6. Laura,
We recommend that you match us hour for hour. If we spend four hours on bonds, you should do the same at home. Plan to take two classes a week. The recommended schedule would be eight hours of class and eight hours of at home study time.

  7. Yoana,
Absolutely yes! There is increased international demand for the CPA designation. In fact, NASBA and the AICPA have been investigating the potential for international administration of the CPA exam.

  8. Sonia,
Yes, you can register for the review course while still in college. However, most states require that you have your college degree to register to take the CPA Exam. If you study during your spring semester, plan to take the CPA Exam immediately after graduation.

  9. Have you seen students take these review courses during their last semester at college?

  10. Sarah,
Yes, we have students take the review course during the last semester at college. I did this when I was in college. I found this to be an effective way to study. The review reinforced what I was learning at college.

  11. I'm graduating in May with 130 credits. In addition, I have 20 credits not transferred from Community College and about 60 credits from international university (translated by World Educational Services). My accounting credits including tax, auditing, business law, and finance are adding up to 40. Do I qualify to apply for CPA examination under the new requirements (150/36)? Will all my credits count?

  12. Julia,
You must get your international credits evaluated by one of the approved agencies listed on the CPA Exam Application. The application can be obtained at www.nasba.org. After you obtain this evaluation, we can determine if you have enough credits to meet the 150 credit hour requirements.
